Viewing Platform, mobile installation, commisioned by Muine Bheag Arts, Grass Roots, 2021

Muine Bheag Arts commisioned artist Carl Giffney to develop and produce a mobile artwork for it’s  inaugural Grass Roots in 2021.

You are invited to join artist Carl Giffney as part of mobile installation, Viewing Platform. The work will travel to various locations in Muine Bheag during the course of the programme - check our social media for regular updates.

Carl Giffney’s work as a visual artist investigates social capital through empirical and performative research, carrying out activities like mining, beekeeping and modifying cars. He works in eclectic settings which have recently ranged from sea horse farms, to churches to motorways. Physical materials play very important roles in his socially engaged practice.

Giffney is a graduate of Ireland's National College of Art and Design and the Irish Institute of Art, Design & Technology. He also studied at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, before completing his postgraduate studies in 2011. He is co-founder and director of The Good Hatchery, an experimental artist-led initiative in the bog lands of Offaly which ran from 2007-2016. Carl Giffney is the recipient of the Irish Arts Council Visual Artists Bursary 2017.

Recent exhibitions include Excavations, HIAP Gallery Augusta, Helsinki (FI); PEINT, Leitrim Sculpture Centre (IE); Partij voor Ierland, Roodkapje Rotterdam (NL); and Sisyphus Americana, Hoffman LeChance Gallery, St. Louis (US). From 2013-2018 he participated in Frontiers in Retreat, a multi-disciplinary residency platform in Finland, Scotland, Latvia, Serbia, Iceland, Spain and Lithuania, supported by the EU Culture Fund.
